The Exe Valley Caravan Site, for adults only, occupies an enchanting, peaceful setting in a wooded valley in the Exmoor National Park in Somerset. Set alongside the sparkling River Exe, the campsite has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading from our doorstep. It is a wonderful location for camping and country loving folk. There is plenty to interest all nearby, including spectacular, heather-clad moors where Red Deer run free; secret combes, crystal clear rivers and streams full of wild trout. You will find pools and waterfalls, Exmoor ponies, unspoilt villages, National Trust properties and beautiful gardens. The scenic North Devon coast and Lorna Doone Valley are also within reach. Free fly fishing on site or at Wimbleball Reservoir 4 miles away. The area is ideal for horse riding, pony trekking, walking (easy or challenging), biking, or simply relaxing. An excellent local inn opposite serves lunchtime and evening meals and there is a village shop and post office at nearby Winsford. The carefully maintained campsite covers 4 acres of level grass between the River Exe and our own mill stream. Every pitch has ample space and enjoys its own section of the bank beside the fast flowing clear water of the river or the mill stream. A further acre of our land provides for a leisurely stroll up to our weir. We live on site in Bridgetown Mill, which dates back to the 17th Century. Once a grain and flour producing mill, it was last used for milling during the Second World War. The building is in good repair and much of the mill machinery is in working order. The mill is listed as being the largest on Exmoor. Dulverton and Dunster are two villages close by, which support a variety of high quality shops in beautiful old market settings. They both enjoy good tearooms and restaurants with Dulverton positioned by the River Barle, and Dunster lying beside its famous castle maintained by the National Trust. The seaside town of Minehead, is a bustling town with an indoor swimming pool, small harbour, and interesting shops. It is also home to the West Somerset Railway which runs restored steam trains the 20 miles between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) and Minehead. The coastal scenery is stunning and a return trip makes a memorable day out. From Minehead travel through the picturesque village of Porlock which is well worth a visit, and on to Lynmouth and Lynton - the view of Lynmouth from Countisbury Hill is breathtaking. Take the water operated Cliff Railway up to Lynton and walk to the Valley of Rocks - an outcrop of strange shaped rocks which rise above the cliffs and are full of legends. Further along the coast are the beaches of Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton - all voted Best Beaches and home to surfing, swimming, sand yachting or just paddling. There are golf courses at Minehead and Saunton, and the course at Westwood Ho! is the oldest in the country. Surrounding the Campsite which is inside the National Park, you have the beauty of Exmoor. Several walks start from the Campsite, or take a guided safari trip, or explore the Exmoor bus service. For relaxation, you can cast your fishing line from your pitch, and look out for the kingfishers and otters in the area. Alternatively, watch a game of cricket at the nearby Bridgetown Cricket Ground, voted recently as the loveliest ground in England. Rates : From 5.50 per person and 3.00 extra for electric hook up. AA 4 Pennants. Groups by prior arrangement. Open from mid March to mid October.
