Campsite of the month
Eilean Fraoich Campsite, North Shawbost, Isle Of Lewis, Western Isles
Eilean Fraoich Campsite is located in North Shawbost a pretty crofting village in Isle Of Lewis, Western Isles. The campsite was opened in 1992 and is overlooked by Beinn Bhragair.
Whether you roll up our road in the mother of all motor-homes, or pop off the village bus with your tent and gear on your back, or – indeed – turn up with your bike, your backpack contents and a big smile, at Eilean Fraoich Campsite we offer everything you need for an idyllic camping holiday.
There’s plenty of mown meadow on our level fields for the adventurous simply to erect their tent. at the campsite we also have hard-standing pitches for your car and towed caravan; similar stances for your motor-home; abundant fresh running water and electricity hook-ups for your powered holiday comforts, and a safe and discreet drain for chemical-toilet waste.
Our cheerful ‘Downing Street’ block houses shower and toilet facilities (in separate apartments for men and women) as well as our laundry room, where you can wash and dry clothes and bedding; we have washing-lines outside, too, for those breezy summer days.
We have besides a kitchen block with cooking facilities, refrigerators, deep freeze, dishwashers and attached, cheerful dining and common-rooms. Both buildings and all amenities are accessible to wheelchair-users.
Well-behaved dogs are very welcome at Eilean Fraoich Campsite and we have a pleasant pooch-walking area on the gentle hillside below the camping ground, towards the village river.
We like all our guests to have a peaceful, happy holiday and without risk of damage to caravans and cars. So we ask respectfully that from eleven at night to seven in the morning is observed as a ‘quiet time’, with no loud music or other disturbance, and that the laundry facilities are not used after seven in the evening.
The adjacent swimming-pool at Shawbost school is open most evenings. The village post office sells a few very limited goods; petrol, groceries and a range of other good things can be purchased at the Welcome In Filling Station at Barvas. And the 40 North delicatessen at North Bragar sells many delicious things to eat, all made or grown on the premises.
In accordance with local custom, we ask that washing not be hung out on Sundays. Ball-games are not allowed on Eilean Fraoich Campsite – we don’t want any battered vehicles, bashed and bawling children or bruised visitors – but guests are free and welcome to use the public playing-field right beside us.
