Situated just outside the historic market town of Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, Smeaton's Lakes is the ideal place for your fishing and touring needs. Opened in 1996, this family run business has gone from strength to strength. Set in 90 acres, the site is open all year round, with the security and service that CCTV and a resident warden provide. Located on the A616, just off the A1 at North Muskham, Smeaton's Lakes is approximately 1 mile away from Newark-on-Trent, with its Civil War connection, and close to Nottingham, Lincoln and Southwell. In fact, there is a Civil War earthwork on the site. With Sherwood Forest and the 'Major Oak' being less than half an hour away, the whole area is steeped in history and legends. The International Antique Fairs are held at Swinderby, approximately 8 miles away and Newark Showground every couple of months. Touring : This popular site with tarmac access roads has 90 hardstanding pitches, all with electric hook-ups. Some pitches have lakeside views. The reception area is stocked with soft drinks, milk, chocolate, crisps etc. Newspapers can be ordered on request. Contractors can be catered for. Tents Welcome. Smeaton's Lakes welcomes rallies and has a separate field available to accommodate up to 100 units. There are also indoor facilities with toilets and a compact kitchen which can be used for rallies or small functions. Caravan storage is available at competitive rates on a six-monthly or yearly basis. Fishing : If you enjoy a good catch then Smeaton's Lakes is the place for you. With several finger ponds, carp and coarse lakes, and a good stretch of the River Trent, there is something for every coarse fisherman. All the pegs are easily accessible and some can be reached by car, enabling those with physical impairments to enjoy their fishing. There's a great feeling of spaciousness here, for the site is on 20 acres within 4000 acres of parkland where you can walk, cycle or ride. Children will enjoy Clumber Park as it is part of what was once Sherwood Forest, and there are plenty of reminders of the Forest's most famous resident, Robin Hood. Call at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, 10 miles drive from the site, to find out all about him, and to see the Great Oak where he is said to have hidden, and then visit Nottingham to experience a most imaginative audio/visual exhibition called 'The Tales of Robin Hood'. You are involved in scenes including a horse ride and a rescue - the children love it.
